Why are people so fascinated with butterflies?

Butterflies are something living that we can appreciate.

You can get up close to them.

They aren't afraid of us.

And (maybe most importantly!) they don't bite.

"Butterflies also help us understand the interaction of plants with other organisms," Brinda says.

Butterfly watching also offers us an escape. "Watching butterflies is an opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply and enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature at her best," he says.

How can you enjoy butterflies?

Brinda recommends a quick and easy three-step process for enjoying butterflies:

Plant brightly colored nectar plants to provide a food source for the butterflies.

Position a comfortable bench in a nearby shady spot.

Wait for the butterflies! It's not required, but Brinda finds that a good book and a table for a favorite beverage are also nice enhancements.)



What plants bring butterflies?

Some suggested nectar plants: Pentas, lantana, verbena (verbena can be an annual or a perennial).

All need full sun or at least four hours of sun.

They can be planted in the ground or in containers.
